-- ROM ICS 4.0.3

The next ROM that I tried out, the same day, about 20 mins after the failed first attempt, was the ICS ROM also linked to in the same post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788936 (86 MB). This is not the real ICS ROM, it is just ICS themed - the way to confirm this is to check the kernel version, if it's 2.xxx it is not ICS. The flashing was perfect, and this time the system did boot up successfully. I had my first successful mod.

The best part of this was the earlier boot image was replaced with a more pleasant one - a blue power button icon in a black background. The ICS theme looks great, the battery level now shows the  percentage of charge left. The default lingo is not comprehensible, probably some Chinese script, but this can be rectified by changing the language to English from the settings menu. Just look for the option with with an A and change the first option in it. While the ROM scores high marks in the looks department, it is rather handicapped - no file browser, no Google Play, no Maps etc. The one good thing about the ROM was that it had mapped the search touch key on the A5 to the power button, so no need to press the actual power button, just a touch should now suffice. Secondly, the power down menu now included helpful options like Reboot REcovery which made the phone reboot into recovery menu without the user having to depress the relevant keys. The Holo launcher was also not as efficient as the Go Launcher that I was using previously.

The lack of functionality meant that I couldnt continue with this ROM, also the fact that the calendar still showed the Chinese characters annoyed me.

My SUGGESTION : AVOID
